Portsmouth isn’t a hiking town exactly, but it is a launching pad. Fifteen minutes in one direction gets you flat, marshy wildlife refuge trails. An hour in another gets you a fire tower with a 360-degree view of three states. You don’t need a White Mountains weekend to get outside; you need a free morning and a willingness to drive.

1. Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Newington, NH
Drive time: ~15 min | Distance: Up to 3 mi of trails | Difficulty: Easy
Flat, wide, and stroller-friendly, with observation platforms overlooking Great Bay’s tidal marsh. This is the “I have an hour and want to see something” hike good birding, zero elevation gain, and a payoff view of open water without any climbing.
2. Mount Agamenticus, York, ME
Drive time: ~20 min | Distance: ~1.5–3 mi depending on route | Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
Locals just call it “A-Mountain.” At only 692 feet, it’s an easy summit — but it’s the highest point on the immediate coast, so the observation tower gets you ocean-to-Mount-Washington views for very little effort. A solid pick for a first-timer or a kid’s first “real” hike.
3. Vaughan Woods & Cutts Island Trail, South Berwick, ME
Drive time: ~25 min | Distance: ~2–3 mi | Difficulty: Easy
Riverside woods along the Salmon Falls River, with the historic Hamilton House visible across the water. Shaded, well-maintained, and quiet — this is the “clear your head” hike more than the “chase a view” hike.
4. Pawtuckaway State Park — South Mountain Fire Tower — Nottingham, NH
Drive time: ~35 min | Distance: ~3.5 mi round trip | Difficulty: Moderate
Pawtuckaway is a sprawling park with miles of interconnected trail, but the South Mountain fire tower loop is the move if you only have time for one route. Boulder fields, a working fire tower, and views back toward the Seacoast.

5. Blue Job Mountain — Farmington, NH
Drive time: ~40 min | Distance: ~1.9 mi loop | Difficulty: Moderate
Short, punchy, and disproportionately rewarding. The loop climbs past a small pond to Little Blue Job’s open granite dome, then over to the main summit’s fire tower — on a clear day you can pick out Mount Washington to the north and the Atlantic to the east. Under an hour of hiking for a two-state view.
6. Bear Brook State Park: Bear-Hill Loop, Allenstown, NH
Drive time: ~45 min | Distance: ~3–4 mi | Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
New Hampshire’s largest developed state park, and one of the most underrated. The Bear-Hill fire tower loop threads through quiet forest with a modest climb — a good option when you want mileage without a grind.
7. Mount Major, Alton, NH
Drive time: ~55 min | Distance: ~3 mi round trip | Difficulty: Moderate
The Lakes Region’s most popular hike for a reason — the summit opens up onto Lake Winnipesaukee in a way that makes the crowd on the trail worth putting up with. Go early on weekends; the parking lot fills fast in fall foliage season.

8. Mount Roberts via Castle in the Clouds, Moultonborough, NH
Drive time: ~1 hr 10 min | Distance: ~6.5 mi loop | Difficulty: Moderate–Hard
Starts on the grounds of the Castle in the Clouds estate and climbs through hardwood forest to an open, ledgy summit with a sweeping look back over Winnipesaukee. Longer and steeper than Major, with a fraction of the foot traffic.
9. Mount Willard, Crawford Notch, NH
Drive time: ~1 hr 45 min | Distance: ~3.2 mi round trip | Difficulty: Moderate
The best view-to-effort ratio in the White Mountains, full stop. A steady, well-graded climb ends at a cliff-edge overlook straight down Crawford Notch — the kind of view that usually costs you 4,000 feet of elevation, delivered for under 1,000.

10. Welch-Dickey Loop, Thornton, NH
Drive time: ~1 hr 40 min | Distance: ~4.5 mi loop | Difficulty: Moderate–Hard
The classic “earn it” hike on this list. Long stretches of open granite slab on both summits mean near-constant views for most of the loop — genuinely one of the most photogenic hikes in the state for the mileage. Worth planning as your one longer-drive day of the month.
