Hiking Middle Sister Mountain in New Hampshire: Trails, Views & Tips

Looking for a challenging hike in the White Mountains with incredible summit views? Middle Sister Mountain is a great option, especially if you want a hike with fewer crowds than nearby Mount Chocorua.

I hiked Middle Sister in mid-October with a friend, when the fall foliage was at its peak. We started on the Champney Falls Trail, enjoyed the waterfalls along the way, and eventually continued over to Mount Chocorua for a longer day in the mountains. There are a few trail options for visiting this summit.

You don’t have to hike both summits, though. Middle Sister is a worthwhile destination on its own.

Another option for reaching Middle Sister is to hike the Middle Sister Trail, which approaches the summit from the north. This route offers a quieter alternative to the popular Champney Falls Trail, climbing steadily through the forest before reaching the open ledges and beautiful views near the summit. It’s a good choice if you want to focus on Middle Sister rather than combining the hike with Mount Chocorua. Expect a sustained uphill climb and rocky terrain, especially as you approach the summit.

Distances and times depend on your route. Check current trail conditions before heading out.

What to Expect on the Middle Sister Hike

The Champney Falls Trail is my recommended route for a first visit. It starts along the Kancamagus Highway and climbs through the forest, passing Champney Falls and Pitcher Falls about a mile into the hike.

These waterfalls are worth stopping for, especially in the fall when the surrounding forest is full of color.

Beyond the falls, the trail continues steadily uphill toward the ridge between Mount Chocorua and the Sisters. You’ll reach open ledges with increasingly beautiful views before arriving at the summit of Middle Sister.

From the top, you get expansive views across the White Mountains, including a particularly impressive perspective of Mount Chocorua.

You can return the way you came or continue toward Chocorua for a much longer adventure.

Should You Add Mount Chocorua?

If you’re an experienced hiker with plenty of time, combining Middle Sister and Mount Chocorua makes an excellent full-day hike.

We continued across First Sister and climbed the exposed ledges toward Chocorua. There was ice on some sections during our October hike, which made us cautious about the steep rock.

Our complete loop was approximately 10.5 miles with 3,300 feet of elevation gain and included a descent via the Brook, Beeline, and Bolles Trails.

This extension involves exposed terrain, steep sections, and numerous stream crossings. I wouldn’t recommend it in wet or icy conditions.

Tips for Hiking Middle Sister

The Champney Falls Trailhead is located along the Kancamagus Highway. Parking can fill quickly during peak foliage weekends, so arrive early.

There are several stream crossings, and high water can make them difficult. I’d avoid this hike during spring runoff or after heavy rain.

Download an offline trail map before starting. Cell service can be unreliable, particularly in the valleys.

Middle Sister is also an option for hiking with dogs, although you’ll want to use caution around exposed ledges and drop-offs.

Is Middle Sister Worth Hiking?

Absolutely. If you’re comfortable with a moderately challenging mountain hike, Middle Sister offers a wonderful combination of waterfalls, forest trails, and panoramic summit views.

I especially loved seeing Mount Chocorua from the summit rather than standing on it. The view gives you a different perspective of one of New Hampshire’s most recognizable mountains.

For a shorter day, hike Middle Sister as an out-and-back. For a bigger adventure, consider adding Chocorua when conditions are favorable.

Make a Day or Weekend of It

Middle Sister is an excellent hiking option when you’re exploring the Mount Washington Valley and southern White Mountains.
